About Portugal Day – Dia De Portugal – Newark, NJ

Culture. Traditions. Live Music. Great Food. Delicious Drinks.

The Portugal Day Festival in Newark was first organized in 1979 by the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation. The Portugal Day Festival in Newark, New Jersey, is a street festival celebrating the Portuguese people, their language, and culture.

Since then, nearly 300,000 people visit Newark’s Ironbound yearly to celebrate their heritage and culture. From folk dancing to special performances by Portuguese recording artists, this festival aims to contribute to the celebration of Portuguese roots within the communities outside of Portugal.

These festivities are often telecast, live or recorded, to stations in New Jersey and Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa and South America. This festival takes months of planning, including inviting guests to be the Grand Marshal, Honorary Grand Marshal, or any prized attendees over the Portugal Day weekend. Before the big weekend, many events also occur, such as the Portugal Day Gala and flag-raising, which concludes on the festivities’ final day with the emblematic Portugal Day Parade.

This year we aim to keep traditions going and kindly ask for your support by contributing to the festival. As a leader in the community, your involvement with us is an opportunity for your organization to receive exposure and join other individuals and organizations in our community by teaming up to make Portugal Day in Newark the festivity we all know to love and enjoy.
